In 2020 he was awarded his PhD, having already introduced next-generation sequencing into routine NHS service use for improved pathogen detection and rare disease diagnosis. During his PhD, he developed a new array-based DNA test for comprehensive blood group, platelet (HPA) and tissue type (HLA) typing, and founded the Cambridge-led Blood transfusion Genomics Consortium, a global public–private partnership.
